Supporters of RSS student wing ABVP raided the Jadavpur University campus twice within a few hours to carry out what its leaders described as a “surgical strike” and a “Ram Navami puja” to “rid the campus of cockroaches”.
A consolidation of Left student outfits resisted the attempt to storm the campus on Thursday afternoon, after having failed once shortly after Wednesday midnight when they were bombarded with burning balls of cloth. During the afternoon raid, ABVP supporters pushed aside the feeble police resistance and kicked and pushed the locked main gate from outside, while hurling eggs, shoes and sticks inside the campus. But JU students, gathered inside the gates, successfully held them off.
The raiders defaced the university emblem, designed by Nandalal Bose, at the main entrance. Its outer ring came off under the impact of the relentless banging.
