The Left-dominated Calcutta University Teachers’ Association has protested the university’s decision to invite governor R.N. Ravi to deliver a lecture on the Great Calcutta Massacre on Tuesday and said it would spread “communal hatred”.
The association’s secretary, Sagarmoy Ghosh, said that while the governor was welcome to the university as its chancellor, the university “should always refrain from spreading communal hatred and political agenda”. Ghosh said that the university, in its notice announcing the lecture by Ravi, has written that the four days of communal violence “unleashed by the Muslim League Government of Bengal holds crucial lessons for the unity, integrity and prosperity of the nation which our youths must be aware of”.
“The university is a secular institution. How could it write its notice in a way that stokes a communal agenda? This is not expected of Calcutta University,” said Ghosh. The teachers have urged the VC to exercise caution so that the university is not used for “political indoctrination”.
Debasis Das, the registrar who signed the notice on the lecture, defended the way the notice was worded.
“There is nothing wrong with the notice,” Das told Metro.
