New Delhi: Protesting Jamia Millia Islamia students have called off their hunger strike after the university’s registrar met them and assured them of a definite timeline for a student union constitution and to hold elections.

The students were seen celebrating the end of their protest, which lasted for close to three  weeks.Students led a sustained protest and hunger strikes on campus with their demands since October 12, which included the removal of the university’s Chief Proctor and Security Advisor, the release of detained students, withdrawal of punitive action and show-cause notices against students and reopening of the campus for regular academic activities.

While the university has announced key measures, there appear to be growing apprehensions over the fate of detained students and those who face other police action, since two FIRs have been registered by Delhi Police in relation to alleged vandalism during the student protests.
