Mumbai Police Widen Probe Into TISS Saibaba Event; Professors Who Messaged Arrested Student Sent Notices, Field Visits Scrutinised

Mumbai Police have expanded their investigation into an event held at the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) to mark the death anniversary of former Delhi University professor and human rights defender G N Saibaba, issuing notices to two professors who allegedly sent “suspicious” messages to an arrested former student and scrutinising field visits undertaken as part of the institute’s academic programme.

The former TISS student was arrested on Friday from Mumbai’s Chembur area, shortly after a sessions court rejected his anticipatory bail application in a case registered by the institute in October 2025. He was produced before a magistrate’s court on Saturday.

The sessions court rejected the pre-arrest bail applications of two former students while granting anticipatory bail to seven others. The second former student whose application was rejected has not yet been arrested.

All nine were booked after they allegedly raised slogans demanding the release of anti-CAA activists Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam, who have remained imprisoned since 2020 under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).

While opposing their anticipatory bail pleas, police also claimed that the two former students possessed downloaded books and other material that, according to the prosecution, reflected “Maoist ideology”.
