Israel's Actions in Gaza Meet Legal Definition of Genocide: Genocide Scholars' Association

The International Association of Genocide Scholars (IAGS) passed a resolution on Sunday (August 31) declaring that Israel’s actions and policies in Gaza meet the legal definition of a genocide. Since October 7, 2023, the Israeli government has “engaged in systematic and widespread crimes against humanity, war crimes and genocide, including indiscriminate and deliberate attacks against the civilians and civilian infrastructure (hospitals, homes, commercial buildings, etc.) of Gaza”, the resolution notes.

The IAGS resolution highlights the scale of devastation in Gaza – the deaths, disappearances, injuries, torture and arbitrary detention – as well as statements and comments made by Israeli officials – such as calling Palestinians “animals” or calling for “flattening Gaza” to make its point that a genocide is in progress…
