Minister Plays Citizenship Test Hardball with Universities

A new test for citizenship is to be introduced in Sweden in August 2026, and universities are being pressured into creating it, in a move that is seen as undermining university autonomy.

In the Tidø Agreement, as reported by University World News, the government, with the support of the right-wing Sweden Democrats party, decided that those applying for Swedish citizenships should have knowledge about Sweden and be able to speak Swedish, to be documented by tests. The government has asked the universities of Stockholm and Gothenburg to work on the tests in collaboration with UHR, the Swedish Council for Higher Education….
