Students Allege Police Are Trying to Thwart Protests

Students in Botswana are being intimidated by the police to prevent them from participating in protests, Eric Karabelo, the organiser of a recently foiled demonstration, said.

A demonstration which had been scheduled for 8 August did not take place after the police issued a media release saying that, although it was the students’ constitutional right to take part in protest action, the event coincided with a “national event” which would demand the presence of many police officers.
