Sharjeel Imam Seeks Access to Research Material to Complete Phd, Says Incarceration Stalled Academic Work

Muslim student leader and UAPA accused undertrial prisoner Sharjeel Imam has moved a Delhi court seeking access to his academic research material to enable him to complete his PhD thesis, arguing that his continued imprisonment should not deprive him of his right to education. Through his legal counsel, Imam is seeking permission to receive research material on a pen drive, to be delivered by his advocates within the jail premises. Additionally, he has requested supervised access to computer services within the prison to utilise these materials for his doctoral work.

The plea emphasises that the requested research material is not banned or restricted by the Government of India in any form. According to the application, in April, the court had directed the Superintendent of Prisons to consider a similar application. While the previous Superintendent had granted permission for Imam to receive the pen drive from his counsel, he was transferred before the materials could be delivered…
