Once again, the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT)’s history textbooks for schools are at the centre of a political controversy.

Whenever the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has been in power, it has not wasted any opportunity to push its pet project of rewriting history. The history textbooks written by eminent historians including Romila Thapar, Bipan Chandra, Satish Chandra, R.S. Sharma and Arjun Dev in the 1960s were an obvious target. The National Integration Council had recommended the writing of these books to counter the prevailing colonial/communal interpretation of history….
