Jamia Millia Islamia on Wednesday decided to suspend academic and exam-related activities in the physical mode till January 13, a move seen as a desperate attempt to end the ongoing campus agitation demanding student union elections.

The university issued an order in the evening, saying the decision was taken in a meeting of deans, heads of departments, directors and officials of the institution “to ensure safety and security of bona fide students of the university”. “It has been unanimously agreed that the situation of the university campus is not conducive for academic environment,” the order stated.

Teaching activities will now be carried out online till the end of the current semester on November 24. Scheduled exams, theory papers, projects, practicals and viva voce will be conducted online between November 25 and December 24, followed by the winter vacation till January 12. The university will reopen on January 13.
